AMU - Architecture plus Urbanism

Proposal of an iconic, flexible, light and economical building.

As a general idea, we take the wedge as a reference: an inclined plane piece that, when inserted into a crack, serves to divide a body in two, or to couple and adjust two different bodies.

Similarly, the building is inserted into a square-crack, which on the one hand divides two contexts -the hectic of Carrera 11 with the service of the building-, and on the other, connects and adjusts them with the inclined plane, and the transition plaza. By differentiating itself formally and materially from others, the building adopts an iconic institutional image. Formally, the inclined plane is projected that highlights the access and gives way to the subtly buried plaza.

Materially, a floating glass and recycled plastic wood façade is proposed. With this, views of the interior are allowed that contrast with the reflective glass buildings characteristic of Carrera 11. Thus, the facade is intended as a permeable and strategic element, which indicates the activities that take place inside and provides protection according to thermal requirements and lighting of each space.

The result is a set of straight and inclined volumetric skins, which give a unique vitality in the sector, guaranteeing an impact on the memory of users and neighbors. The ambitious program required proposes the incorporation of large-format activities such as cultural activities, the auditorium , the pool and the sports center. In order to accommodate them, a flexible structure consisting of a system of stepped trusses was proposed.

The system is made up of sauteed porches that alternate on 5 floors with Pratt-type trusses, freeing up four floors without columns to house large-format activities. With this system, the distribution of the program is an exercise of "playing in small spaces", where the programmatic requirements are met in a compact way, as required in high-density urban centers. The proposed structural system forms a lightweight unit and economic. The construction elements are part of a standardized and prefabricated assembly, typical of a clean, dry, light and organized construction method. A minimum excavation is proposed, the amount of concrete is reduced, the fixed divisions are reduced, the closed spaces are limited and flexible spaces and translucent closings are promoted: all this reduces the weight of the building and the cost of its foundation.

Additionally, the above means that the construction time is less than that of a traditional structure building. The reduction in weight, the prefabrication of elements and the possibility of executing the excavation of the basement in parallel to the aerial work, mean that the work tasks can be done with efficiency, economy and speed.
